Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul gave India the perfect base in their 2019 World Cup match against Bangladesh at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Tuesday. The Indian starters broke a 4 year record set by Rohit and Shikhar Dhawan for the highest opening partnership for India in a World Cup match.

The duo also topped the 160-start opening position of Jason Roy-Jonny Bairstow to score the highest opening partnership in the current World Cup.

The duo added 180 for the first field against Bangladesh in Edgbaston, which is India’s record in the World Cups. Previously, the best was between Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan at Seddon Park in Hamilton during the 2015 World Cup. India won that game by eight windows.

Rohit Sharma and Shikhar had sewn a 174-race stand for the opening field in the 2015 World Cup match against Ireland at Hamilton. India chased 260 to win the match by 8 windows.

This is also the fourth time that India’s starters have sewn a 150-race stand at the World Cups. Ajay Jadeja and Sachin Tendulkar became the first pair in the 1996 World Cup, while Sachin Tendulkar-Virender Sehwag did it in the 2003 World Cup and Rohit Sharma-Shikhar Dhawan achieved this feat in the Cup match World 2015

Rohit and Rahul broke the record on Tuesday the 30th in Birmingham. Rohit helped the duo get the milestone in style with a limit against Soumya Sarkar.

In the next installment, Soumya Sarkar dismissed Rohit just after completing his century and broke the opening position of 180 races.

Previously, Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar scored three centuries each in a World Cup. Ganguly did it in the 2003 edition in South Africa, while Sachin did it in 1996 when the World Cup was held in the Indian subcontinent.

Rohit became the second batter after Kumar Sangakkara, the Sri Lankan hitting legend, scored 400 in a single edition of the World Cup.

KL Rahul, once again, could not convert a score of more than fifty into a grand entry, as Rubel Hossain caught him in 77.

Rahul had revealed that he had received a good ear from his captain Virat Kohli after his inability to convert starts into high scores.

“When Virat came in, I told him it was not going to work too, it was a bit of two steps, it was important that we had an association, that was a mistake I made against Afghanistan, Virat gave me a lot of attention.” then I came back because in the middle he told me that we both had to take the game to 130-140 and then one of us can take off, “said Rahul.

KL Rahul was promoted to open the innings with Rohit Sharma after regular starter Shikhar Dhawan was excluded from the World Cup with a broken thumb.

Rohit-Rahul had built a career of 136 races against Pakistan’s archrivals in Manchester on June 16, which was his first match as an opening partner.
